In the attic of her parents’ house, Louisa stood up. The ceiling was so low that she brushed it with the top of her head. It was dinnertime. She felt spent and strangely peaceful.

She sat down at the table with her parents. Derk put the platter of meat before her. She put a hamburger into a bun and took a bite. The juice of the meat spread out across her tongue. It tasted salty and delicious. There was a spare patty on the platter, charred and oozing. Automatically Louisa’s eyes went to the empty space beside her, Seth’s place. He was there. He was always there. Penny was talking about buying delphiniums. She was halfway through her third glass of Chianti and her voice sounded like it was coated in Vaseline. Louisa felt the familiar fist of rage closing around her gut. She looked at Derk. He was chewing, staring out into the distance, as remote as a beast in a field. Then her eyes shifted back to Penny. Her mother was looking at her with such love that Louisa could hardly bear to see it; it was like looking into the sun. She wanted to look away but she didn’t. This one time she didn’t look away. The sun dipped below the tree line and the last light of dusk faded from Penny’s face. Louisa could barely make out her features. But she was still there.
